They calculate no derivatives. They prove no theorems. The elegant proofs from first-year courses feel like a distant, irrelevant memory.

And yet.

There’s a course in the first semester that haunts every CS and engineering student: Calculus 1. Half the students fail it the first time. Most suffer through it and avoid anything similar for the rest of their lives. Discrete math, linear algebra, logic - these first-year courses share the same reputation. Brutal. Abstract. Seemingly disconnected from the “real” work that comes later.

Could there be a connection between this early struggle and the later feeling that “none of it was useful”?

I believe there is. And I believe most people are measuring the wrong thing.

The Wrong Question

When developers say they “never use” their degree, they’re asking: When did I last calculate an integral? When did I apply set theory directly to my code?

This is like asking when you last used the specific exercises you did in the gym. You don’t use them - you use the strength they built.

The first-year math courses provide foundation for the courses that come next. But the foundation isn’t just the definitions and theorems - it’s also the thinking. These courses are there to rewire your brain. To force you, for the first time in your life, to think mathematically.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

What “Thinking Mathematically” Actually Means

Before Calculus 1, most students have only experienced math as pattern-matching. You see a problem type, you recall the formula, you apply it. This works through high school.

Then you hit university math, and suddenly:

Problems don’t announce what technique to use

You need to construct arguments from first principles

Precision of language matters - a slightly wrong definition breaks everything

You must hold abstract structures in your head and manipulate them

This is genuinely hard. Not because the content is complex, but because it requires a different kind of thinking than most people have ever done. Your brain literally needs to form new pathways.

The students who fail Calculus 1 aren’t failing because they’re not smart. They’re failing because they haven’t yet made this cognitive shift. This is the strange binary nature of mathematical understanding: if you don’t get it, you fail completely. If you do get it, you can forget all the material and rebuild it yourself - a student who truly grasps Calculus 1 can reconstruct the entire course from just the definition of the limit. The difference isn’t memory or intelligence. It’s that you’ve learned to reason.

How This Shows Up in Real Work

I consider myself a mathematician more than anything else - not because I do math professionally, but because mathematical thinking shapes how I approach everything.

As a product manager and entrepreneur, I run many experiments. When I test something - a value proposition, a target audience, a piece of creative content - I instinctively fix variables. If I’m testing creative content, I keep the audience constant. This way, the search space is smaller, and feedback is interpretable. This isn’t “using calculus.” But it’s the same thinking: isolate variables, reduce dimensions, make the problem tractable.

When I develop a system, I mentally map its possible states and behaviors. If something breaks, this map tells me exactly where the bug could live. I’m not running through code line by line - I’m reasoning about the system’s structure. Again, no integrals involved. But the thinking is mathematical.

The Observable Difference

Over the years, I’ve watched many people work through technical problems - some with strong math backgrounds, some without.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" They see something that looks similar to a past problem and jump to a solution. When they’re wrong, they’re often way off - not close, but in a completely different territory.

People with mathematical training tend to break problems into pieces first. They generate observations before conclusions. They ask “what type of problem is this?” before “what’s the answer?” When they’re wrong, they’re usually wrong in a more contained way - they can identify which piece of their reasoning failed.

This isn’t about intelligence. It’s about trained habits of thought.

The Counterargument

“But plenty of successful developers never went to university.”

True. And when I look closely at these people, I usually find one of three things:

They learned mathematical thinking elsewhere - through competitions, online courses, self-study, or intense curiosity about how things work

They developed it through years of hard experience, essentially putting themselves through the same cognitive training the degree provides, just slower

They’re genuinely exceptional - rare people who think this way naturally

The degree isn’t the only path. But it’s a structured, efficient path. One year of intense mathematical training, guided by people who’ve thought deeply about how to build these skills. You don’t need to commit to a 3-year program - but that first year is worth the investment.

The question isn’t “degree vs. no degree.” The question is: “How will you develop the right tools for combating problems in your future life?” If you have another answer, great. But “I’ll skip it entirely” is not a viable answer for serious technical work.

Why This Matters Even More in the Age of AI

There’s a concern I hear from young people now: “AI can do so much of the technical work. Why do I need to learn this stuff if AI can do it for me?”

This misunderstands what we’re talking about.

AI can generate code. AI can solve equations. AI can even explain concepts. But AI doesn’t think for you. You still decide what to build, how to break down a problem, what questions to ask, whether an answer makes sense.

Mathematical thinking isn’t about doing calculations - it’s about structuring thought. And the person who thinks clearly will use AI far more effectively than the person who doesn’t. They’ll ask better questions. They’ll spot nonsense outputs. They’ll know when to trust the tool and when to doubt it.

If anything, AI amplifies the value of clear thinking. The gap between someone who thinks mathematically and someone who doesn’t will only grow.

What I’d Tell My Younger Self

If I were advising someone starting out today, I’d say: the first year of a math, CS, or physics degree is more valuable than the rest combined.

Not because of what you learn - but because of what it does to your brain.

The later years teach you specific domains. Useful, but replaceable through experience or self-study. The first year teaches you to think. That’s much harder to acquire on your own.

If you’re going to do a degree, take the first-year math courses seriously. Don’t just pass them - actually let them change how you think.

If you’re not going to do a degree, find another way to get this training. Math competitions. Why Are You Doing It To Yourself?

My father developed an interest in nutrition in recent years and began experimenting on himself. Water fasting was one of the things he tried, and watching him practice this sparked my curiosity. I decided to try it myself, first under his supervision, and I was hooked.

When I began researching water fasting, I discovered fascinating science. MIT research showed that 24 hours of fasting doubles the regenerative capacity of intestinal stem cells. Valter Longo at USC found that 48-72 hour fasts trigger immune system regeneration. Research shows that a 72-hour fast reduces circulating IGF-1 by 70%, and this growth factor is linked to aging and cancer.

Recent 2024 research from Queen Mary University confirmed something I’d been feeling - the real transformation happens only after 3 days of fasting, when your body undergoes fundamental molecular changes.

But beyond the research, I was curious about my own capacity. What could my body do? What would I discover about myself?

What Actually Happens Each Day

After multiple 7-day fasts, the pattern has become familiar. Here’s a combination of physical and subjective metrics that explain the journey.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Days 1-2

Ketones: 0-0.5 mM | Blood Glucose: 4.5-5 mM → 3.8-4.5 mM | Hunger: 6-8/10 | Mental Clarity: 5/10

Day 1 feels normal - you’re still running on yesterday’s food. Your body is using glycogen from liver and muscle stores. Glucose and insulin levels drop while glucagon and cortisol rise. Hunger hits within a few hours, but it’s mostly a psychological battle.

By Day 2, around hour 36, your glycogen is depleting and your body starts gluconeogenesis - creating glucose from protein and fat. Fatty acids increase in your blood, early ketones appear (around 0.5 mM), and blood sugar drops to 3.8-4.5 mM. The hunger is intense on Day 2, and for most people it’s the hardest day.

After doing this multiple times, my mind now knows what’s happening. The psychological battle has gotten easier, though the physical process remains the same.

Day 3

Ketones: 1-3 mM | Blood Glucose: 3.8-4.2 mM | Hunger: 3-4/10 | Mental Clarity: 8/10

Everything changes on Day 3. Your body switches to fat oxidation as the primary energy source. Ketone levels reach 1-3 mM, and your brain starts using them for fuel. The PDK4 enzyme increases 13-fold to preserve glucose. This is when the multi-organ protein response begins - your entire body is adapting at a cellular level.

The mental clarity that arrives is remarkable. This is when autophagy reaches high levels - your cells literally eat their damaged parts and recycle them.

I plan my most creative work for days 4-6 now. Problems I’ve been stuck on suddenly have solutions.

Days 4-5

Ketones: 4-5 mM | Blood Glucose: 3.5-4.0 mM | Hunger: 1/10 | Mental Clarity: 9/10

By Day 4, hunger completely disappears. Ketones rise to 4-5 mM - deep ketosis. Growth hormone levels spike 5-20 times normal, protecting muscle while your body burns fat. Autophagy markers increase significantly, and your stem cells start activating. Your immune system begins its recycling process.

You feel physically weak but mentally sharp. Climbing stairs requires rest, but thinking has never been clearer. Blood pressure drops significantly - about 11 points systolic.

Days 6-7

Ketones: 4-5 mM | Blood Glucose: 3.5-3.8 mM | Hunger: 0-1/10 | Mental Clarity: 9-10/10

These final days bring deep calm. Ketones stabilize at 4-5 mM. Your body is now getting about 73% of its energy from fat. IGF-1 has dropped by over 60%, and insulin sensitivity improves despite the fasting state. The protein changes throughout your body persist.

I’ve typically lost 5-7 kg by this point. Despite the weight loss, strength is preserved - though you shouldn’t be working out during the fast itself. After breaking the fast and recovering for a few days, you can lift the same weights as before, though endurance activities remain harder for a while longer.

There’s something profound about reaching Day 7. It’s not about proving anything anymore. It’s about experiencing a state of being that our ancestors knew but we’ve forgotten. At this point, you can continue fasting for more days if you like, or transition into a ketogenic diet to maintain the metabolic state while beginning to eat again.

The Essential Protocol - Electrolytes

This part is critical. Without proper electrolyte supplementation, water fasting becomes dangerous. Here’s exactly what I take daily:

Sodium - 2-4g (Pink Himalayan salt)

Potassium - 300-400mg (NoSalt or potassium chloride)

Magnesium - 300-400mg (magnesium glycinate)

I mix these into a glass of water:

1/2 tsp Pink Himalayan salt

1/4 tsp potassium chloride

1/4 tsp magnesium sulfate

I drink this once a day. The taste isn’t pleasant, but your body needs these minerals. When you fast, low insulin causes your kidneys to dump sodium and water. Without replacement, you can’t properly hydrate and risk serious complications.

Breaking the Fast

After 7 days, how you refeed determines whether you benefit or harm yourself. I take 2 days to return to normal eating.

Day 1 post-fast: Start with broth and some soft foods. Small portions - your digestive system needs to wake up slowly. I usually have some diluted juice, broth, maybe a small salad with olive oil.

Day 2: Add more variety but keep portions moderate. Steamed vegetables, eggs, and fruits. Listen to your body.

Day 3: By the third day, you can eat everything normally. Your digestive system is fully back online.

The key is going slow on the first day. Your body needs time to restart digestive processes and restore electrolyte balance.

What I’ve Gained From This Practice

Mental Clarity

The sharpness during and after each fast is incomparable. My thinking becomes clearer, decisions easier, creativity flows. The effect lasts weeks after each fast.

Relationship with Hunger

I now understand the difference between true hunger and psychological appetite. This disassociation from hunger helps me do intermittent fasting easily, resist unhealthy foods when they’re around, and last through long days without being cranky about hunger. After going 7 days without food, the daily fluctuations of hunger seem trivial. I eat when I choose to, not when my body habitually expects it.

Physical Reset

My skin clears completely during each fast. Energy becomes stable - no afternoon crashes. Various minor health issues resolve themselves. Research suggests this is autophagy at work, cells cleaning out damaged components.

Metabolic Benefits The physical transformations are remarkable. Stem cell regeneration doubles after just 24 hours, while prolonged fasting triggers immune system regeneration. Blood pressure drops significantly and insulin sensitivity improves. Growth hormone spikes protect muscle mass while the body efficiently burns fat for fuel.

Mental Resilience

Each fast builds mental strength. There’s power in knowing you can go a week without food and actually feel better in many ways. It changes your perspective on what’s necessary versus what’s comfortable.

The Challenges

Muscle Loss

You do lose muscle mass during a 7-day fast. While research shows your strength is preserved, you lose lean mass - some of it is water and glycogen, but some is actual muscle tissue. It takes time to rebuild after each fast. This is one of the main tradeoffs you need to accept.

Physical Weakness

Days 3-5, you’re weak. Stairs become mountains. But it’s temporary and manageable. I plan my fasts around lighter work schedules.

Social Situations

It’s actually become an interesting topic to discuss. When people find out you’re fasting, they’re fascinated. Then comes the fun game - everyone tests you: “Aren’t you hungry?” “Don’t you want this?” They wave food in front of you, offer you their favorite snacks. It’s playful, and I enjoy it. I simply say “I’m fasting” and most people respect it while being genuinely curious. You can still go to dinners, meetings, social events - you just drink water and have interesting conversations about why you’re doing this.

The Mental Game

Some moments are hard. Day 2 especially. But having done this multiple times, I know what’s coming. The discomfort is temporary, the benefits lasting.

Who This Isn’t For

Extended fasting is dangerous for:

Type 1 diabetics (risk of ketoacidosis)

Pregnant or breastfeeding women

Anyone with eating disorder history

People who are underweight

Those on medications requiring food

Do your own research. Consult medical professionals. What works for my body might not work for yours.

My Current Approach

I do one or two 5-7 day fasts per year, usually timing one with Yom Kippur.

Besides that, I listen more to my body about whether I should really eat. When I get sick and hunger reduces, I fast for about 24 hours to let my body heal.

Practical Insights After 5 Years

Preparation matters. Reduce carbs for 2 days before starting. Your Day 2 will be much easier.

Create structure. Plan what you’ll do each day. Days 4-6 are perfect for creative projects, reading, thinking work.

Track everything. Weight, ketones, blood sugar levels - it gives clarity to where you are in the process. The patterns across multiple fasts teach you about your body.

Exercise helps. Light exercise on Day 1 depletes glycogen faster, making the transition smoother. But keep it gentle. No exercise on the rest of the fast.

Respect your body. If something feels wrong, stop. This isn’t about suffering or proving toughness.

A Deeper Reflection

After 5 years of this practice, I respect fasting as a powerful health tool. More than that, it’s a way of understanding what we’re capable of, of reconnecting with a fundamental human experience our ancestors knew intimately.

Every major religion includes fasting. There’s wisdom in that. We live in abundance, constantly fed, never truly empty. The fast reminds us that we’re stronger than we think, that our bodies are remarkably adaptable, that clarity often comes from constraint rather than consumption.

When I fast for 7 days, I’m not just cleaning my cells or resetting my metabolism. I’m practicing an ancient human skill - the ability to be empty and be okay with it. In our world of constant consumption, that’s become a radical act.

To those fasting this Yom Kippur - צום קל (Tzom kal - easy fast) and גמר חתימה טובה (Gmar chatima tova - may you be sealed in the Book of Life for good).

Thanks for reading Liran’s Substack! We’ve developed systems capable of understanding and generating any form of structured information, yet we confine them to conversational text interfaces. This approach is not only suboptimal, but also a clear indication of our misunderstanding of the full potential of these systems.

Andrej Karpathy captured this perfectly in his Software 3.0 keynote: “Whenever I talk to ChatGPT or some LLM directly in text, I feel like I’m talking to an operating system through the terminal.” His analogy is precise. Just as early computers required users to memorize commands and syntax, we’re forcing users to articulate their needs through prompts and parse responses through text.

The numbers reveal the scale of this mismatch. ChatGPT attracted 3.7 billion visits in October 2024, making it one of the world’s most visited websites. Users of Character.ai spend an average of 93 minutes per day in chat interfaces. Yet chat-first interfaces represent only a small fraction of traffic flowing through the internet’s most significant sites. According to Similarweb data, the top websites are dominated by visual interfaces - Google commands 18.32% of global web traffic, YouTube holds 6.96%, while visual-first platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Amazon round out the top rankings. The vast majority use rich visual interfaces, such as search engines, social feeds, video platforms, and e-commerce sites, because they convey information more efficiently.

This explosion of chat interfaces has created what we call ‘chat fatigue’- the cognitive exhaustion that comes from constantly crafting prompts, interpreting text responses, and re-prompting for clarification. Every AI interaction becomes a writing exercise, forcing users to work at the speed of text rather than the speed of thought. This is a clear indication of the limitations of current chat interfaces and the urgent need for a more efficient solution.

The Information Bandwidth Hierarchy

Human information processing follows a clear hierarchy:

Visual pattern recognition: Near-instantaneous

Reading: 250-300 words per minute

Listening: 150 words per minute

Writing: 40 words per minute (average typing speed)

Chat interfaces operate at the bottom of this hierarchy. Users must serialize their thoughts into text, wait for responses, and then deserialize the text back into an understanding. Traditional interfaces leverage the full stack - visual hierarchy, spatial relationships, color, animation - to communicate at the speed of perception rather than the speed of reading.

Only 10-14% of text contains actual signal versus noise. In audio, it drops to 8%. Videos contain merely 5.5% signal. Yet we’re forcing AI interactions through the lowest-bandwidth channel available.

The Core Thesis: AI-Native Rendering as the Natural Interface

Here’s the central insight: Large Language Models are not just text generators - they are universal interface generators waiting to be unleashed.

Consider what LLMs can already do:

Generate syntactically perfect code in any programming language

Create complete web applications from descriptions

Understand design patterns and user experience principles

Adapt outputs based on context and user needs

The same model that can explain quantum physics can also generate the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for an interactive quantum physics simulator. The same intelligence that can analyze financial data can create the optimal dashboard for visualizing that analysis.

The question is not whether AI can generate interfaces - it clearly can. The question is why we’re not letting it.

What’s truly needed is an AI-native rendering system - an infrastructure where AI doesn’t just power the backend or fill in templates, but generates the entire frontend experience in real-time. This approach is a significant departure from current methods that treat AI as a service within traditional architectures.

From Static to Dynamic: The Inevitable Evolution

Traditional interface design follows a waterfall from designer to developer to user. Designers create mockups, developers implement components, and users interact with fixed interfaces. This made sense when computational resources were scarce and user needs were predictable.

But this model breaks down in the age of AI:

Infinite use cases cannot be anticipated by finite design teams

Personalization at scale requires more than A/B testing

Context-aware interfaces need to be generated, not selected

The solution is Generative UI - interfaces created in real-time by AI based on the user’s specific context, intent, and needs. Not templates filled with content, but novel interfaces generated for each interaction.

Evidence: The Pond Experiment

To test this thesis, we built a proof of concept at Pond. We demonstrate a system where:

LLMs maintain complete control over rendered interfaces

Every interaction generates new UI elements

Context persists across interactions

Real-time performance matches user expectations

Pond works by giving the AI direct control over what appears on screen. When you interact with Pond, you’re not chatting with an AI that returns text - you’re interacting with an AI that generates the entire interface in real-time. The engineering breakthrough lies in optimizing inference specifically for UI generation and streaming complete webpages as they’re created. This required rethinking how LLM outputs are processed and rendered, creating a pipeline that can stream HTML, CSS, and JavaScript components with minimal latency while maintaining the coherence and functionality of the generated interface.

Implications for Digital Experience

The Hyperpersonalized Web

Every website looks identical to every visitor. Whether you’re a power user or first-time visitor, shopping for yourself or someone else, researching or ready to buy - you see the same homepage, navigate the same menus, fill out the same forms. This one-size-fits-all approach made sense when personalization meant A/B testing button colors.

AI changes this fundamental constraint. Instead of showing everyone the same interface and hoping it works for most, AI can generate interfaces tailored to each person’s specific context and intent. An AI-native rendering system would create shopping interfaces tailored to each user’s context - not filtered results but dynamically generated stores.

Beyond Applications

The implications extend beyond web browsers. Any screen becomes a canvas for AI-generated interfaces:

Digital advertising that generates unique creatives based on viewer context

Home displays that create interfaces based on inhabitants’ needs

Public screens that adapt to their audience in real-time

The End of Apps

Why navigate through fixed application interfaces when AI can generate the exact interface needed for each task? The app paradigm itself - discrete programs with predetermined interfaces - becomes obsolete when interfaces can be generated on demand.

Chat Fatigue and the Market Reality

The market is already signaling its exhaustion with chat interfaces. While 85% of customer service leaders will explore conversational AI in 2025, users are showing signs of fatigue. They spend 93 minutes daily in chat apps but struggle with the cognitive load of constant prompting and text parsing.

This isn’t sustainable. 80% of users now resolve 40% of their queries directly through chatbots, bypassing websites entirely. But this creates a new problem: users get information through the narrowest possible channel, missing the rich interaction possibilities of visual interfaces.

Chat fatigue is not just user frustration - it’s a market signal that we need better interaction paradigms.

The Philosophical Shift

This represents more than a technical evolution. It’s a fundamental shift in how we conceive of human-computer interaction.

Traditional HCI assumes:

Interfaces are designed by humans for humans

Functionality is predetermined and fixed

Personalization happens within constraints

AI-native interaction assumes:

Interfaces are generated by AI for specific moments

Functionality emerges from user needs

Every interaction can be completely unique

Conclusion: The GUI Revolution, Redux

The transition from command-line interfaces to graphical user interfaces made computers accessible to billions. But we’re still using the equivalent of command lines to interact with AI.

The next revolution won’t be as visible as windows and mice replacing terminals. Interfaces will become smarter, more responsive, more personal. Users won’t necessarily know AI is generating their experience - they’ll notice that digital products finally understand them.

This is not about building better chatbots or adding AI features to existing interfaces. It’s about recognizing that we need AI-native rendering systems where the interface itself is dynamic, alive, and generated. The AI should not just answer within existing interfaces - it should create the interface itself.

The question facing technologists, designers, and entrepreneurs is simple: Will you continue building for the chat paradigm that’s already creating user fatigue, or will you help build the AI-native rendering systems of tomorrow?

If this vision excites you - if you see the potential for interfaces that truly understand and adapt to users - reach out to us or explore our work at Pond. Someone added on an adjacent blogpost that early success in life creates a foundation for taking bigger leaps later on. This resonates deeply with my personal story.

I've been lucky to be super curious about computers from an early age. This passion led me to learn extensively about technology, complete my Bachelor's degree during high school, compete on the Israeli national team, and serve in an elite military unit. Each environment exposed me to brilliant minds, and these experiences compounded over time into strong technical skills. These achievements also built a compelling resume that made it easy to demonstrate my capabilities to others.

Before completing my military service, I had a profound realization – one that still amazes me when I see others haven't grasped it: The salary I could command in a standard 9-5 job would be sufficient to support my entire future family at a satisfying quality of life. This is a HUGE privilege, and I felt so lucky when I first understood this.

Consider the implications: excluding extraordinary global changes, I could always return to a 9-5 job and cover my family's expenses. This is genuine financial security.

So there I was in my early 20s, contemplating my life path with this realization in mind. I saw two options:

Earn a high income → acquire assets and build wealth → wait until investments can replace income → achieve financial freedom → do whatever the fuck I want.

Do whatever the fuck I want now → take a job mainly for income if needed later.

<picture></picture>

I chose the second path, which led me to:

Take an extended trip after my military service

Join a startup as its first employee to learn about company building

Leave to start my own company and fail

Switch industries, leaving my competitive advantages behind

Start another company within less than a year

I'm still mindful of the future in my decisions. seem like a niche world of code golf and obscure algorithmic problems, but the reality is quite the opposite. It is an enriching domain, filled with intellectual adventure and a sense of community that fuels both learning and enjoyment. Diving into the competitive programming scene opened doors I never knew existed and shaped me into the problem solver I am today.

Early Beginnings: From Math Riddles to Programming Contests

As a young student, before I even knew how to write a single line of code, I was drawn to math riddles and competitions. There is something almost magical about turning a puzzle around in your mind until you discover a clever insight. I participated in Israeli Math Olympiad training camps, diving deep into challenging puzzles and sharpening my logical thinking daily. The friends and mentors I met there are the sharpest minds I have ever encountered, and it was there that the seeds of competitive problem solving were planted.

Stepping into the World of Programming

When I first encountered programming, I quickly realized that the techniques, insights, and patterns I had developed from math competitions were directly applicable. I attended the Israeli competitive programming camps that select the team to represent Israel in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). At first, it was tough to connect my mathematical intuition with code, but that "aha" moment arrived during one of my first training sessions when I was 15 years old. When I submitted a solution online and saw that bright green "100/100 score" on my screen, it was absolute confirmation that my reasoning was sound. Unlike math tests, I did not have to wait hours or days for a result. My mathematical reasoning turned into a coded solution, and the system instantly recognized that it was correct. That sense of immediate reward was intoxicating.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" programming, I started participating in every online competition I could find, sometimes waking up at 3 AM for competitions in different time zones. I always pushed myself to try something new, to face new problems, and to improve my coding skills. Over time, I became hooked on the exhilaration of these contests.

Through dedicated practice and countless hours of problem-solving, I gradually built up my understanding of algorithms and data structures. This foundation proved valuable when I later took university courses in these subjects. The skills I developed during competitions also helped shape my academic interests, leading to my master's thesis in optimization and complexity (read the paper here). Interestingly, I met my master's thesis advisor through Codeforces (profile) when I was looking to register the University of Haifa team. He became not only our first official coach but also my academic mentor, showing how the competitive programming community can open unexpected doors.

At age 17, I had the honor of representing Israel in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), where I earned Bronze medals in 2015 and 2016 (IOI statistics). Later, with my teammates from the University of Haifa, we achieved a Silver medal in the 2016 regional ICPC competition. programming community is truly exceptional. The veterans of math and informatics Olympiads are the smartest people I know, and their reasoning abilities are second to none. Through engaging with them and learning their approaches, I refined my thinking and became more efficient at designing solutions.

My involvement did not stop at competing. I founded the University of Haifa ICPC group and have been the official coach for the last nine years. I did this because I wanted to keep that competitive spirit alive, to stay engaged, and to help others discover the same joys and growth I experienced. It's incredibly rewarding to see how students who attend my competitive programming trainings become the best in their classes and secure positions in the most elite military units, just as I did. They often tell me how the problem-solving skills and analytical thinking developed during our training sessions were instrumental in their success.
<div problem-solving mindset and analytical thinking skills I developed prepared me for challenges in life and work, and these abilities proved invaluable when facing tough selection processes and various obstacles ahead. The ability to tackle complex situations, break them down, and find optimal solutions is universal, and it all started with these programming contests. Another technical skill I gained was writing bug-free code - in competitive programming, with strict time constraints, there's little room for debugging, so you learn to code carefully and precisely from the start.

What I particularly enjoyed about competitive programming was how it became intertwined with travel and exploration. Each competition and bootcamp offered an opportunity to visit new places, combining my passion for problem-solving with the excitement of discovery. These trips, fully sponsored for competing teams, became my favorite way of traveling. The experience of forming the university team taught me valuable lessons beyond programming - securing funding for travel, convincing talented students to join, and organizing participation in competitions developed my proactive approach to challenges. These organizational and leadership skills now serve me well in the business world.

Reflections

What began as a natural enjoyment of solving problems, combined with the immediate feedback loop of competitive programming platforms, evolved into a passionate journey that continues to this day. The thrill of finally cracking a difficult problem after hours of concentrated effort, the satisfaction of discovering elegant solutions, and the privilege of learning from brilliant minds along the way - these experiences have shaped not just how I approach technical challenges, but how I think about problem-solving in general.

Getting Started with Competitive Programming

If you're interested in exploring this world, here are some excellent resources to begin your journey:

Codeforces - A leading platform with regular contests and a vast problem archive

Israeli Olympiad in Informatics - The official platform for the Israeli programming olympiad

Meta Hacker Cup - An annual algorithmic programming competition by Meta

Thanks for reading Liran’s Substack! At this moment, like countless others in my WingTsun practice, I receive immediate, undeniable feedback about my mental state. As I reset my stance and reconnect with my training partner, I realize this momentary lapse mirrors a pattern I've noticed in recent work meetings: letting my attention drift when I should be fully present. In WingTsun, such insights arrive with physical clarity, transforming the training floor into my personal philosophy laboratory.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

My colleagues often comment on my persistent smile and adaptability when plans change unexpectedly. They're curious about how I maintain composure amid chaos. The answer lies in principles I've absorbed through years of WingTsun practice: the art of yielding without retreating, of maintaining forward momentum with both persistence and ease. My teachers embody these qualities beyond the training floor, leading fulfilling, active lives that demonstrate how WingTsun's principles extend far beyond self-defense. Their example continually reinforces my conviction that this path – one I stumbled upon almost by accident – has become my compass for navigating life's complexities.

Yet martial arts were far from my mind as a naturally calm six-year-old when my first encounter with combat sports ended in tears after being slammed onto a Judo mat during a competition. Fighting simply wasn't in my nature. Years later, at thirteen, when a friend in my gifted program persistently invited me to try WingTsun, I initially dismissed the idea. "Martial arts?" I thought. "I'm not a bullied kid who needs self-defense." His enthusiasm eventually wore down my resistance – a moment of yielding that would reshape my future.

There, I encountered Sifu Asaf, whose passionate approach transformed my understanding of martial arts. His classes transcended mere technique, incorporating games that reinforced learning, sharing meaningful stories, and revealing the principles behind each exercise. Most crucially, he equipped me with three fundamental tools: awareness, boundary-setting, and the security that comes from knowing powerful chain punches are available as a last resort. These tools proved their worth repeatedly in potentially violent situations, where my training helped me maintain control and prevent physical confrontation.

When the gifted program ended after two years, the nearest WingTsun classes were too far to attend regularly. Despite considering alternatives like Aikido, nothing matched what I'd experienced. The void left by this absence only reinforced how deeply WingTsun's simplicity and practicality had resonated with me. I continued searching for classes, checking periodically for new opportunities closer to home, until finally, at eighteen, a WingTsun group opened in Kiryat Tivon. The adult classes were different – more technical, less playful than my earlier experience – but the core principles remained unchanged. Even during my military service, I found ways to maintain my practice, a dedication that has continued uninterrupted since then.

Each training session now presents specific challenges that extend beyond physical technique. When I lose the contact point with my training partner, it often reflects moments where I've failed to maintain emotional connection in personal relationships. When I hesitate to advance despite a clear path, it mirrors missed opportunities in my professional life. These parallel insights from WingTsun classes frequently catalyze moments of clarity about necessary life changes. Some of my most meaningful insights emerge in the days following training, as I go about my daily activities. Whether I'm in the middle of work, commuting, or engaging in conversations, I find myself reflecting on the challenges from class and suddenly recognizing how they mirror situations in my life. These moments of recognition, occurring naturally throughout my week, transform physical lessons into profound personal insights, helping me recognize patterns and opportunities for growth I might otherwise miss.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

What began as a reluctant acceptance of a friend's invitation has blossomed into one of the most transformative forces in my life. Yet, here I am, several years into my career, having transitioned from research to product management. When old friends ask about this shift, their surprise is palpable. After all, why would someone deeply technical move away from their expertise?

The Seeds of Change

My journey began in academia, where I worked on my Master's Thesis in algorithms and data structures, followed by a stint as a cyber researcher during my military service. These experiences honed my analytical and research capabilities, but they also revealed something unexpected: I was becoming less interested in technology for technology's sake, and more fascinated by its impact on real-world problems.

The Cost of Choosing the Wrong Problem

During my military service, I learned a hard but valuable lesson about problem selection. As the lead researcher on a significant project, I watched as we pursued the most technically challenging path to solve a problem, when a simpler solution existed. This choice cost us substantial time and resources – and personally affected me as the primary researcher. This project led to a year of failures, with countless hours spent pursuing dead ends and developing technology for our research. Despite our best efforts, we made little progress towards our goal. This prolonged period of setbacks was mentally and emotionally draining, as I grappled with the feeling of letting down my team and superiors. However, these failures were invaluable lessons. This experience profoundly shaped my future approach to problem-solving: I learned that sometimes the most sophisticated technical solution isn't the right answer.

Two Pivotal Pieces of Advice

Early in my career, while contemplating entrepreneurship, I received two pieces of advice from successful entrepreneurs who had built unicorns that would shape my trajectory:

"Get yourself in front of customers"

"You cannot jump directly to business. Move from research → product → business"

At the time, the meaning of "product" in the second piece of advice wasn't clear to me. But it would become crystal clear later in my journey.

The Natural Progression

At Sentra, I deliberately positioned myself close to customer interactions. As the first software engineer, I gravitated toward customer-facing areas: onboarding processes and infrastructure deployment. This naturally led me to a solution/presales engineering role.

However, as our team grew and sales professionals joined, I noticed something interesting. My work, while important, felt tactical. There was a strategic layer above – the product management layer – where the real direction was being set.

The Reality of Product Management

Transitioning to product management was eye-opening. As Ben Horowitz eloquently describes in Good Product Manager / Bad Product Manager, it's an incredibly demanding role. You need to:

Sell effectively

Understand customer needs better than they do

Drive delivery

Grasp complex technical challenges

Manage countless competing priorities

The role offers tremendous leverage through task-setting, but it comes with a cognitive load that demands exceptional self-management skills.

Mastering Self-Management

The transition to product management forced me to develop robust self-management practices. I learned two crucial lessons:

Ruthless Prioritization: Sometimes you have to let things drop and trust they'll work out. Not everything that seems urgent is truly important.

Mental Clarity: I discovered meditation as a crucial tool for maintaining clear thinking throughout intense days of context-switching and decision-making.

The Research Foundation

What I've come to realize is that successful product management always starts with solid research. You need to build and maintain a complex mental model incorporating:

Deep user understanding

Market dynamics

Strategic positioning

Solution architecture

My background in algorithms and complex systems became surprisingly relevant here. The ability to model and understand complex systems comes naturally to me, and it translates directly to building comprehensive product mental models.

The Communication Evolution

Communication was my biggest growth area. By nature, I preferred minimal communication and solving problems independently. However, product management demanded a different approach. I developed new habits:

Front-Loading Context: I learned to initiate conversations by providing comprehensive context upfront, both verbally and in writing.

Creating Shared Understanding: Establishing product north stars, clear principles, and a common team language became fundamental to effective communication.

Regular Touch Points: Instead of working in isolation, I actively created opportunities for alignment and feedback.

Why Product Management Was Inevitable

Looking back, the transition to product management wasn't just a career choice; it was inevitable. It combines three of my core strengths:

Research capabilities honed through academic and military experience

Passion for self-improvement and embracing communication challenges as growth opportunities

A genuine interest in the business impact of technology

More importantly, it satisfies my desire to solve the right problems – not just any problems. Too often in tech, we invest significant effort solving the wrong problems. Product management gives me the opportunity to ensure we're directing our technical expertise toward meaningful challenges.

The Evolution Continues

Product management isn't just a role – it's about defining, building, and selling products that matter. It's about bridging the gap between technical possibility and market need. This journey from code to product wasn't about leaving technology behind; it was about elevating its impact.

As I continue to grow in my product management role, I find myself increasingly curious about the business side of technology. The skills I've developed – from understanding market needs to bridging technical and business worlds – are broadening my perspective on how products fit into larger market dynamics and business strategies.

Reflecting on the advice about the progression from research to product to business, I can see how my journey is naturally evolving. This post details the opportunity, my analysis, and why it ultimately didn't materialize as expected.

Discovery

The opportunity arose when I noticed discrepancies between the contract rate of pufETH and its market rate while adding a price feed for eOracle. Typically, such differences shouldn't exist for redeemable assets.

Upon investigation, I found that the asset was only redeemable when not reaching the daily limit. Checking the contract revealed that the limit was set to 0.

~ cast call 0xD9A442856C234a39a81a089C06451EBAa4306a72 "getRemainingAssetsDailyWithdrawalLimit()(uint256)" --rpc-url <https://eth.public-rpc.com>

Examining all blocks prior to 20963354 revealed that the DailyLimit wasn't functioning as a true daily limit, but instead remained at 0 for an extended period. This prolonged zero-limit state created the arbitrage opportunity. Surprisingly, the Puffer team's reopening of the redeem function coincided with my research into it just one day prior - a remarkable coincidence.

Conclusion

This experience marked my first venture into arbitrage opportunities, and I came surprisingly close to capitalizing on one. My initial gut feeling that something was amiss with the pufETH contract proved correct, reinforcing the importance of trusting instincts in DeFi.

The process highlighted how crucial meticulous investigation and attention to detail are in decentralized finance. This level of scrutiny provides an edge not only in my professional work but also in identifying unique opportunities like this one.

While the arbitrage didn't materialize as hoped, the experience was undeniably thrilling. It demonstrated the potential rewards of combining technical knowledge, intuition, and persistence in the rapidly evolving DeFi landscape.

Thanks for reading Liran’s Substack! Among these, the inversion principle stands out as a powerful tool for problem-solving and decision-making. Munger's iconic talk, "How to Guarantee a Life of Misery", brilliantly demonstrates this approach by outlining the surest path to an unhappy life.

Inspired by Munger's ingenious use of inversion, I've decided to apply this mental model to the world of decentralized finance (DeFi). Specifically, let's explore how one might achieve the dubious honor of becoming the worst oracle in the DeFi space. After all, understanding how to spectacularly fail can often illuminate the path to success.

If you're aspiring to set a new low as the most unreliable oracle in DeFi, you're embarking on a journey that requires a special kind of negligence. This guide will show you how to undermine the very fabric of DeFi, wreaking havoc on lending protocols, derivatives platforms, liquid restaking tokens, and more. By following these steps, you'll not only fail spectacularly but also provide a cautionary tale for the entire industry.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

1. Deliver Rock-Bottom Prices to Trigger Mass Liquidations

Begin by consistently providing asset prices that are significantly below their actual market values. This will cause automated systems in lending protocols to liquidate users’ collateral unnecessarily. Investors will see their assets seized, not due to genuine market movements, but because of your inaccurate data. Derivatives platforms relying on your feeds will misprice contracts, leading to substantial losses. Liquid restaking tokens, which depend on accurate oracles to extend their utility, will find their tokens undervalued, discouraging adoption and undermining user confidence. It’s a surefire way to destroy trust and bring down any platform that depends on you.

2. Inflate Prices to Create Unsustainable Debt

Conversely, occasionally supply your clients with grossly inflated asset prices. This entices users in lending platforms to borrow more against their collateral than is prudent. When the market corrects, these platforms will be left holding bad debt. Traders in derivatives markets will take on excessive leverage based on faulty data, leading to catastrophic liquidations. Liquid restaking tokens that use oracles to promote their token’s utility will appear overvalued, misleading users into overextending themselves and eventually facing significant losses. Pushing your clients toward insolvency or personal financial disaster becomes an effective strategy.

3. Be Easily Manipulated by Flash Loan Attacks

Make no effort to secure your price feeds against manipulation. Allow attackers to use flash loans to momentarily spike or crash asset prices, exploiting protocols that rely on your data. Lending platforms will face sudden defaults, derivatives contracts will be settled at manipulated prices, and liquid restaking tokens will experience volatility that erodes trust and hampers their spread. Being the weakest link that enables widespread fraud is indispensable in your quest to be the worst.

4. Provide Glacially Slow Price Updates

In markets where timing is critical, ensure that your oracle updates prices with significant delays. By the time your data reaches clients like lending platforms, derivatives exchanges, or liquid restaking services, it’s as useful as last week’s news. Users will make decisions based on outdated information, resulting in poor executions and financial losses. Lending protocols won’t adjust collateral ratios in time, leading to unnecessary liquidations. Liquid restaking tokens will fail to reflect current staking yields or asset values, discouraging participation and hindering their adoption. This is an excellent way to frustrate users and tarnish your clients’ reputations.

5. Fail During High Market Volatility

Design your systems to be least reliable when they’re needed most—during periods of high market volatility. Let your oracle crash or your data feeds freeze when everyone is desperate for real-time information. Lending platforms won’t be able to assess risks accurately, derivatives markets won’t price contracts correctly, and liquid restaking tokens won’t reflect true market conditions, stalling their growth. It’s like having a lifeline that snaps when you’re dangling over a cliff; utterly useless when disaster strikes.

6. Use Centralized and Unreliable Data Sources

Undermine the decentralized essence of DeFi by sourcing your data from a single, unreliable exchange. Create a sole point of failure ripe for exploitation. When that exchange faces issues or manipulations, your clients across lending platforms, derivatives markets, and liquid restaking services will receive flawed data. Problems in one area will ripple throughout the entire system, magnifying the damage and impeding the spread of liquid restaking tokens.

7. Ignore Low Liquidity and Suspicious Exchanges

Include price data from low-liquidity or questionable exchanges without any scrutiny. This makes it easier for prices to be manipulated with minimal trading activity. Attackers can exploit these weaknesses to drain funds from lending pools, manipulate derivatives contracts, or skew the perceived value of liquid restaking tokens, hindering their adoption. It’s akin to leaving the gates wide open in a fortress situated in hostile territory.

8. Lack Transparency in Price Calculations

Keep your methodologies shrouded in secrecy. Offer no clarity on how prices are determined, making it impossible for clients—whether they are lending protocols needing to manage collateral risks, derivatives platforms requiring precise pricing, or liquid restaking tokens using oracles to broaden their utility—to verify accuracy or fairness. In an industry built on transparency and trustlessness, being opaque is a guaranteed way to sow distrust and invite chaos.

Conclusion

This exercise in inversion, inspired by Charlie Munger's mental models, provides valuable insights into the critical role of oracles in the DeFi ecosystem. By exploring the path to becoming the worst oracle, we've illuminated the importance of reliable data provision in decentralized finance.

The steps to failure we've outlined serve as a roadmap of pitfalls to avoid. They underscore the far-reaching consequences of unreliable oracles in the interconnected world of DeFi, where inaccuracies can cascade through lending protocols, derivatives platforms, and innovative solutions like liquid restaking tokens.

Ultimately, this inversion exercise reminds us that in the complex landscape of DeFi, the quality of foundational services like oracles can significantly impact the stability, security, and evolution of the entire ecosystem. By understanding what not to do, we can better appreciate the crucial role that reliable data plays in fostering trust and enabling the continued growth of decentralized finance.

Thanks for reading Liran’s Substack! The experiment was simple: could I earn just one dollar online from a product by simply asking for it? It proved successful!

Here's what I learned along the way.

1. The Thrill of Earning That First Dollar

When I started JustAsk, I wasn't sure what to expect. Two days passed without any contributions, and I began to wonder if my simple approach was too naive. Then, on the third day, I woke up to discover that someone had contributed one dollar! The excitement was palpable - it wasn't just about the money but the validation that my idea resonated with someone. That single dollar fueled my motivation and reaffirmed that even the smallest successes can have a big impact.

2. The Importance of a Strong Distribution Channel

Interestingly, the contribution came from the Israeli Indie Hackers community, not from the global platforms where I had also shared my project, such as Reddit, Product Hunt, Hacker News, and Twitter. In about 30% of the places I wanted to post, I discovered that I couldn't just share my project freely - I was required to pay or have an established reputation.

This experience highlighted the value of strong distribution channels. In my case, the local community served as an effective platform because of the shared connections and mutual support. There's a sense of familial support among Israelis, a collective spirit that stands together against the world. I realized that having a well-established reputation in a distribution channel can significantly amplify your reach and propel your project forward. Connecting with the right audience - people who share common values or backgrounds - can make all the difference.

3. Marketing Is Both Crucial and Challenging

Initially, I believed that simply posting about my straightforward and fun website in multiple places would attract visitors. I assumed that the simplicity of JustAsk would naturally draw people in. However, I quickly learned that traffic doesn't come easily. Posts get buried quickly, and many platforms are saturated with similar strategies, often bolstered by AI-generated content to boost visibility.

I came across articles like this one, which highlight tactics that are already widely exploited.

<a Dealing with Criticism and Negativity

Another unexpected aspect was facing criticism and negative comments online. About 30% of my posts got rejected or blocked. This was one of the first times I encountered harsh words from strangers about my work. It was a reminder that no matter what you do, there will always be detractors. The key is to stay resilient, focus on your goals, and not let negativity derail your progress. I've learned to ignore the naysayers and continue moving forward with confidence.

5. Embracing the Journey

While the experiment started as a simple quest to earn a dollar, it evolved into a meaningful journey of self-discovery and learning. I haven't just proven that it's possible to make money online with minimal resources; I've also gained insights into the importance of community, the realities of marketing, and the need for resilience.

For more about the story behind JustAsk, you can read my previous blog post: JustAsk: Proving to Myself That Earning $1 Online is Possible or visit JustAsk.World.

Sometimes, all it takes is to just ask.

Thanks for reading Liran’s Substack! With all the elaborate business models and marketing strategies out there, it's easy to get overwhelmed from getting started on an indie hacking journey. So, I decided to challenge myself: Can I earn only one dollar online from a product?

And then it hit me - the simplest approach might be to just ask for it.

The Story Behind JustAsk

JustAsk is my little experiment rooted in simplicity and authenticity. Instead of getting tangled up in complex plans or spending ages developing a product, I wanted to strip it all down to the basics. My goal is to see if a straightforward and sincere request can help me achieve this modest aim: earning that first dollar from a product.

Why Focus on a Product?

Having previously earned money both through giving online services and my roles as a software engineer and product manager, I wanted to embark on a new adventure by creating and selling a product. Instead of exchanging my time for money, I'm interested in offering something that continues to provide value even after it's created - even if it's just a small digital product. There's something exciting about seeing if a product can keep working for you after it's launched, starting with just a single dollar.

The Idea Behind JustAsk

Imagine launching a website with the sole purpose of asking for $1 - not selling a product, not offering a service, just a simple request. That's exactly what I've done with JustAsk.World! It's a bold and exciting experiment to see if I can prove to myself (and maybe inspire others) that sometimes all you need to do is ask.

Taking the Leap

I wanted to strip away all the complexities and get down to the purest form of online earning: a genuine ask. It's thrilling to think that by simply putting myself out there and requesting a single dollar, I could not only reach my goal but also demonstrate the power of straightforward action.

Inspiring the Community

If I can earn that first dollar just by asking, imagine what you could achieve by taking a leap with your own ideas! I hope this experiment ignites a spark in others to pursue their passions without hesitation. Let's break the mold and show that sometimes, simplicity is all it takes to make things happen.

How You Can Be Part of This Journey

Your support isn't just about a dollar; it's about joining me in valuing simplicity and authenticity.

Visit JustAsk.World: Check out the site and see what this is all about.

Contribute If You'd Like: If this idea resonates with you, consider contributing $1 to help me prove that simplicity can succeed in earning from a product.

Share Your Thoughts: I'd love to hear what you think about this experiment.

Final Thoughts

JustAsk is a humble experiment with a straightforward goal: to prove to myself that I can earn my first dollar online from a product by simply asking for it. early days of the internet, accessing content was a complex process. Users needed to know the exact location of the data they wanted, typically in the form of an IP address. This dependency on specific locations made data retrieval complex and inefficient.

Evolution of Addressing

MAC Address

The Media Access Control (MAC) address served as the first layer of network addressing, identifying devices within a local network. However, MAC addresses were limited to local communications and could not address the need for a more scalable solution for internet-wide content access.

Logical Addressing (IP address)

The introduction of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses marked a significant step forward. IP addresses allowed devices across different networks to communicate, providing a more practical method for accessing content over the internet.

DNS Introduction

The Domain Name System (DNS) revolutionized content access by translating human-readable domain names into IP addresses. This abstraction simplified the process of locating content on the internet, but it still relied on a centralized structure and specific locations for data storage.

Content Access in the DNS-Driven Internet

DNS simplified content access by translating domain names into IP addresses, making it easier for users to navigate websites. However, content is still controlled by the domain owner, who decides what is served. We still don't have a way to access the content just by referring to the content itself; we must mention the owner (DNS) in this case. While DNS improved accessibility, it didn't fully address this need.

Enter Decentralized Storage

Decentralized storage distributes data across multiple nodes instead of a single location. It uses content identifiers (CIDs) rather than physical addresses, simplifying data access by allowing retrieval based on content rather than location. This means users can retrieve content using a constant CID, regardless of where it is stored or who owns it.

IPFS and Arweave Overview

IPFS and Arweave are leading decentralized storage solutions. IPFS uses Content Identifiers (CIDs) to locate and retrieve data chunks, while Arweave employs transaction IDs for permanent data storage. Blockchain technology is essential for both, providing a decentralized ledger that ensures data integrity, immutability, and incentivizes storage contributions, making data reliable and always available.

Emerging Properties: Immutability, Statelessness, and Simplicity

Decentralized Data is Immutable

Immutability refers to the property of data that ensures it cannot be altered once written. In decentralized storage, immutability is a key feature, providing a reliable and tamper-proof record of data. This is achieved because CIDs are based on the content’s cryptographic hash; if the content changes, the identifier changes as well. This ensures that users can trust the data they retrieve is authentic and unchanged, which is crucial for applications requiring high levels of security and trustworthiness.

Decentralized Data is Stateless

Stateless systems are easier to manage and maintain because they reduce dependencies and potential points of failure. Decentralized storage systems inherently avoid maintaining state by using content identifiers that remain unchanged. This ensures the system is straightforward and robust, as it doesn't rely on tracking or updating the state of data across different nodes.

Content Identifiers Simplify Access

Content identifiers simplify access by providing a unique and consistent reference to specific pieces of data, independent of their physical location. Unlike traditional methods that rely on knowing the exact server or domain where the content is stored, CIDs allow users to request and retrieve content directly based on its unique identifier. This abstraction removes the complexity of locating data, making the process of accessing information much more efficient and user-friendly.

Conclusion

Decentralized storage represents a significant leap forward in the evolution of internet technology. By eliminating the dependency on content location and ownership, it simplifies data storage and retrieval, making systems easier to manage. This simplicity, along with the immutability and statelessness of data, has the potential to transform how we access data on the internet, making it much more direct and straightforward than we are used to.

Thanks for reading Liran’s Substack! The Effectiveness of Free Markets and Decentralization

Adam Smith's concept of the invisible hand, introduced in his seminal work "The Wealth of Nations," posits that individuals pursuing their self-interest inadvertently contribute to the overall good of society. This principle underpins the effectiveness of free markets, where decentralized decision-making leads to innovation, efficiency, and growth.

In a free market, the forces of supply and demand determine prices and the allocation of resources. This mechanism ensures that resources are used where they are most valued, fostering efficient production and consumption. The competition inherent in free markets drives innovation, as businesses strive to differentiate themselves and meet consumer needs more effectively.

Historically, free markets have outperformed heavily regulated economies. For example, the rapid economic growth seen in countries that embraced free market principles, such as the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, contrasts sharply with the stagnation observed in centrally planned economies. The success of free-market economies can be attributed to their ability to adapt quickly to changes, foster competition, and encourage entrepreneurship.

Free markets also promote decentralized decision-making, which is crucial in a rapidly changing and complex world. Instead of relying on a central authority to make economic decisions, free markets allow individuals and businesses to respond to market signals, leading to more efficient outcomes. This decentralization reduces the risk of systemic failures and enhances the resilience of the economy.

However, the digital age presents new challenges that require a system capable of embodying these principles of decentralization and transparency more effectively. Traditional market structures and regulatory frameworks struggle to keep pace with the rapid technological advancements and the increasing complexity of modern ecosystems.

2. Increasing Complexity of Modern Ecosystems

Several factors contribute to the rapid increase in the number of agents participating in modern ecosystems and services:

Digitization: More services are moving online, increasing accessibility and convenience. For example, the number of internet users has grown from 1.5 billion in 2008 to over 4.9 billion in 2021.

Globalization: People from around the world can access various services, expanding the market. Services like Amazon and Alibaba have millions of users across different countries.

Cloud Computing: The reduced cost of running software-based agents allows more participants to enter the ecosystem. Companies can now scale their operations quickly and at a lower cost.

AI: Enhanced decision-making capabilities and automation streamline processes and improve efficiency. AI-driven services can manage vast amounts of data and provide insights that were previously impossible.

These advancements lead to more complex ecosystems with a growing number of agents, making it challenging to create and enforce effective governance rules. Traditional systems struggle with inefficiencies and corruption, as seen in large-scale financial systems during the 2008 financial crisis, where regulatory failures and lack of transparency led to significant economic turmoil.

3. Blockchain as the Solution

Blockchain technology is well-suited to address the challenges of modern, large-scale ecosystems by providing a decentralized, transparent, and secure foundation. Here's how blockchain aligns with the principles of free markets and can effectively manage complex ecosystems:

Decentralization: Blockchain operates without a central authority, distributing control among participants. This decentralization reduces the risk of corruption and inefficiencies that often plague centralized systems.

Transparency: All transactions on a blockchain are visible and verifiable, fostering trust and accountability. This transparency eliminates ambiguities and ensures that all participants have equal access to information.

Blockchain protocols serve as hard-coded rules for how the market works, acting as a coordination system between parties. By writing these rules formally into the blockchain, it ensures that all rules are well-defined and leave no room for ambiguity. When rules are encoded in this manner, they must be explicitly stated and agreed upon by all parties involved. This formal definition process helps in clarifying expectations and responsibilities, thereby reducing disputes and misunderstandings. With clear, unambiguous rules, the market operates more efficiently as all participants understand the exact terms and conditions under which they are operating.

In addition to defining rules clearly, blockchain also automates many governance processes. Smart contracts, which are self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement directly written into code, ensure that transactions and processes are automatically enforced without the need for manual oversight. This automation reduces administrative overhead and the potential for human error or manipulation. By automating governance, blockchain enhances efficiency and reliability, ensuring that market operations are conducted smoothly and consistently.

As ecosystems continue to grow and become more intricate, traditional governance models will become increasingly inadequate. Blockchain provides a scalable, transparent, and secure system capable of managing the complexities of future markets by hard-coding the rules of engagement and automating governance processes.

Conclusion

Blockchain technology is uniquely suited to manage the complexities of modern ecosystems characterized by a high volume of agents and intricate interactions that surpass human understanding. By providing a decentralized, transparent, and automated coordination system, blockchain can effectively govern these large-scale environments. As we face an accelerated technological landscape driven by AI, blockchain stands out as the coordination system we need to ensure efficient, transparent, and fair operations in increasingly complex ecosystems.

Thanks for reading Liran’s Substack! Setting a regular meditation schedule helps establish a routine and strengthens your mindfulness practice. Whether it’s early in the morning or during a midday break, find a time that works for you and stick to it.

Breath at Every Doorway

A simple yet powerful trick is to take a deep breath every time you pass through a doorway. This acts as a physical and symbolic gesture of resetting your mind and returning it to the present as you enter a new space.

Daily Gratitude List

Keeping a daily list of what you’re grateful for can shift your focus from what’s missing to what’s abundant in your life. This practice not only cultivates positivity but also brings your attention back to the many gifts of the present moment.

Smartwatch Vibrations

Technology can be a great ally. Set your smartwatch to vibrate every hour as a prompt to take a mindful moment. Alternatively, writing the word “Now” on your watch can serve as a constant, gentle reminder to center yourself.

Visual Reminders

Place visual reminders like post-its, quotes, or images in locations you look at frequently—the bathroom mirror, your workstation, or next to your bed. These can remind you to breathe deeply, observe your surroundings, or simply pause.

Chimes and Bells

Set up a gentle chime or bell on your phone or computer that goes off at regular intervals. This sound can be a call back to the present, helping you break away from autopilot mode and engage with the moment.

“Be Present” Notes

Keep a note with “Be Present” at the top of your phone or notebook. Seeing this message frequently throughout your day can reinforce your intention to stay mindful.

Serene Phone Background

Change your phone background to a serene image with the words "Be Present." Each time you unlock your phone, you’ll receive a calming reminder to return to the present moment.

Conclusion

Creating an environment filled with reminders and cues to be mindful doesn’t have to be complicated. By integrating these simple practices into your daily life, you can significantly enhance your ability to stay present and enjoy every moment to its fullest.

Thanks for reading Liran’s Substack!
